Mini 3 Pro D-Cinelike grading advice?

Tue Jun 07, 2022 8:13 am

Hi there,

I need some advice for grading D-Cinelike footage from the DJI Mini 3 Pro in DaVinci. I would like to apply a CST to the footage so I can put it in my workflow. But unfortunately there are no conversion LUTs or profiles available Blackmagic Forum • View topic (4)

Any advice? Thanks

Pete

I'm an amateur but my understanding is this: D-Cinelike is basically just a Rec709 video with less visual contrast and saturation baked in. So I would bring it into a color-managed workflow as if it were Rec709 and then just do your grade from there. I find the gamma wheel is really what brings the life that I feel like D-Cinelike is missing.

It's 6 months since these posts so I was wondering if either of you has found a DJI Mini 3 Pro profile for use with CST yet? I tried using the DJI profile that's built in but it's not quite right. Just wondering if there are any rumors about BlackMagic providing it in an upcoming update?

You should be able to do a quick search and find a number of them. On my phone right now, the Ground Control freebie was top of the list.

I've only dealt with a few clips of this, but it didn't take much to "normalize" it. Not nearly as log-ish as S-log3-cine for comparison.

A bit of contrast expansion while trimming Offset to center the brightness, add a touch Sat. Done. Takes as long to find the LUTon the list. Blackmagic Forum • View topic (12)

It will likely never be a color space in BMD's list. As others mention it's pretty much just Rec.709/Gamma 2.4 but with lower contrast so should be treated as such within color management. Non-display referred color spaces need to have the math available to linearize the gamma which typically is explained in the vendor's whitepaper. D-Cinelike is likely not an encoding that can be linearized by such a function.

What is the advantage of D-cinelike compared to "proper" color/gamma spaces like Dlog?

And it can be preferred over log encoding if your only acquisition bit depth option is 8bit, to not break too much when needing to normalize and grade in post. Or for very quick turnarounds/live events.

Well if Dlog is supported by the CST node or color management, it don't think the turnaround of cinelike is quicker right? Ever since i got used to log formats, i even think rec709 would not always be faster. Only times are indeed live events.

Thank you all for the replies - good info - I was interested in knowing about the possibility of D-Cinelike showing up in Resolve vs LUTs. I can understand from the posts here why that will probably not happen. Thanks again.

But the argument about using a milder 'log' curve with 8 bit is a valid one for sure.

Totally agree! I was just talking in the general sense. Not everyone is a colorist, understands or can use LUTs/color management or edits in Resolve.

There's fewer chances of crushing or clipping the image in a "Log-ish" gamma space. I would just deal with it manually and get on with life.

i have a mini 3 pro with D-cinelike and as nicholas wrote, adjusting
contrast and saturation is a very good starting point for final grading.
D-cinelike is not a normal log file, but very easy to achieve the desired result.

It would be so useful to have a CST if the math can work! Please add your voice to the request for official CST Support and a current workaround...
