He was raised in the Metro Atlanta area and was attending Heritage High School in Conyers, Georgia where he had completed tenth grade. Jamaal's accomplishments are many.

His academic honors include membership in the National Beta Club and Academic Team. Perhaps, his proudest moment came when he was accepted into the Pre-Engineering Program at Georgia Tech to begin June 24, 1995. Throughout his life he received numerous trophies, plaques, medals and certificates honoring his dedication and time spent in pursuit of sports. He earned letters in JV Football and JV Academic Team. Jamaal excelled spirtually as well and was a committed member of Hillside Truth Center, Inc.

He was a regular participant in the March-of-Dimes Walk-A-Thons, and collected food for the Rockdale County Food Bank. He leaves to cherish his memory, his mother and father, Sylvester Smith and Noreen Francis, step-mother, Marilyn Smith and step-father, William Burns, brother, Jabaris Smith, sister, Jazmyn Smith, maternal grandparents, Philbert and Veronica Francis, a host of other relatives and friends. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Jamaal Smith Scholarship Fund at South Trust Bank Carolyn Conway, Decatur Branch.
