Lee, who survived the kamikaze sinking of a destroyer and later helped NASA send all manner of spacecraft into the heavens, died Feb. 23 at a Washington hospital.
He was 80 and lived in McLean, Va. He died after heart surgery, his family said. Mr. Lee worked until the day of his death, most recently as a special adviser to Spacehab, a Washington company that provides services to NASA that he helped build after leaving the space agency in 1987. He spent 23 years at NASA, where he played important roles in the Apollo moon landings, the first joint space venture between the United States and the Soviet Union, and the development of the shuttle program.
As mission director for the last six Apollo launchings including the Apollo 13 mission, which limped back to Earth after an oxygen tank exploded midflight he had the 1 uneasy task of straddling two worlds: the bureaucratic, often political milieu of NASA headquarters and the no-frills environment in which astronauts and their craft were prepared for voyages. Capt. Eugene A. Cernan, who in 1972 became the last astronaut to walk on the moon, recalled on Monday that Chet Lee, as he was known, spent a lot of time with the astronauts in flight simulators and walked the lava fields of Hawaii, which were used as a training field for lunar excursions. "Unlike most of the folks in Washington, he just took a lot of personal interest," said Mr.
Cernan, now chairman of Johnson Engineering, a subsidiary of Spacehab outside Houston. "He just wanted to get down and dirty with us and better understand the problems we were encountering." Chester Maurice Lee arrived at NASA by an indirect route. He was born April 6, 1919, in Derry, the son of Joseph and Mary Lee, who had emigrated from Mercenesco, Italy. He graduated in 1942 from the U.S. Naval Academy; the Navy then sent him to MIT for radar training.
Two years later, he was a gunnery officer on the destroyer Drexler when it was attacked by Japanese kamikaze pilots off Okinawa on May 28, 1945. The ship sank in less than two minutes, killing 158; Mr. Lee was among the 52 who survived. After the war, he began training intensively in missile systems. He was active in the Navy's development of the Polaris missile, designed to be launched from submerged submarines.
He then commanded the destroyer Gyatt and, from 1963 to 1964, a destroyer group. The missile training caught the attention of NASA, and in 1965, when it was trying to meet President Kennedy's goal of putting a man on the moon, he became an assistant mission director for the early Apollo missions. His career at NASA gave him a firsthand look at some of its finest moments and its 1 most desolate. On Jan. 27, 1967, he was present in the blockhouse at Cape Canaveral during a simulated countdown for Apollo 1.
When a fire -broke out on board, three astronauts were killed. Mr. Lee had been monitoring activities in the cabin through headphones. Later, as director of shuttle operations, he briefed a group of candidates for the "teacher in space" program about the risks they were facing. Among those in the group was Christa McAuliffe, who died when Challenger blew up shortly after liftoff in 1986.
But there were successes as well. Apart from the moon landings, he oversaw the Apollo-Soyuz mission, in which Soviet and American astronauts docked in space in 1975. BAKER George Wallace Baker, age 91, of Monroe, Georgia, died March 5, 2000. The son of the late Russell Henry Baker and Nettie Jackson Baker, he was born and grew up in Summerville, Georgia. He graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the University of Georgia where he ran track and later earned a masters degree in Mathematics.
After serving in the Farm Home Administration and as an instructor in the Civilian Conservation Corps, Mr. Baker moved to Monroe and began working at the Farmers Bank where he specialized in agricultural lending. He served the bank for 50 years as loan officer, President and Chairman of the Board until his retirement in 1995. In addition to his banking career, he owned and operated a dairy and beef cattle farm. A dedicated church leader at the First Baptist Church of Monroe, he taught Sunday School for 48 years and served as Chairman of the Board of Deacons.
He also established an Educational Trust Fund to aid college students pursuing Christian ministry. He served his community as Chairman of the Walton County Board of Education and the Walton County Development Authority. He was President of both the Monroe Rotary Club and the Walton County Chamber of Commerce. Mr. Baker was awarded the J.L.
McGarity Citizenship Award in 1989 for his community contributions. Mr. Baker is survived by his wife of 60 years, Virginia Shepard Baker; three children, Faye Baker Clark and William N. Clark, Sr. of Birmingham, AL, George W.

Marion (Jack) Gober, 77, retired Colonel, U.S. Air Force, and native of Covington, died March 5. He was a graduate of North Georgia College, Dahlonega, Ga. He entered the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1942, but having a prior private flying license was immediately sent to flight school where he became a flight instructor for hundreds of pilots for the duration of WWII.
Following the war, he attended architectural school, but re-enlisted in the U.S. Air Force. He was instrumental in the construction of the early warning radar system known as the Dew Line. He retired from service in 1969 and moved to Florida. The last twelve years were lived in the North Georgia Mountains.
He was preceded in death by his wife of over 50 years, Margaret Ann Hackney. Mr. Landers served in the U.S. Army, August '42 February '46, and was a W.W. Il Veteran of battles in Northern France. He retired in 1980 as Supervisor with the City of Atlanta Water System after 42 years of service.
He was also a member of Mableton 1st Baptist Church, VFW No. 5290 in Conyers, Moose Lodge No. 1775, and the Doric Masonic Lodge No. 548. SUDIA Mrs. Marguerite Elizabeth (Polly) Sudia (nee Delony) died Monday, March 6, 2000. She was a committed volunteer serving with Emory University Hospital Auxillary for 26 years and as president from 1981-1983, receiving the 5000 hour pin and Volunteer of the Year in 1996. She was also a member of Georgia Hospital Association's Council on Auxiliaries from 1979-1981 (policy setting body governing hospital auxiliaries across Georgia). She volunteered at Fernbank Museum of Natural History since it opened and was an officer in Philathea Class of Decatur First Baptist Church.
Mrs. Sudia, who worked for Capital Records in Atlanta and New York, also volunteered with the American Red Cross, and the Perimeter College Symphony Orchestra. She is survived by her husband, Dr. W. Daniel Sudia; daughters, Shawn Sudia-Shehan and her husband, Paul Shehan, Shelly Sudia; and grandson, Matthew Daniel Sudia.
Funeral services will held Wednesday, 11 a.m. in the chapel of A. S. Turner and Sons, Rev. Norbert Lorentz officiating.

GRIFFIN HILL WITTMAYER Mrs. Ruth Wittmayer of Dunwoody, an award winning photographic artist, recognized for her impressionistic close up photographs of flowers, died March 6, 2000. Known affectionately among her peers in the Professional Photographers of America as the "Flower Ruth achieved the rank of Master of Photographic Craftsman from the PPA, and in 1999 received the coveted Fellowship Degree from the Amrican Society of Photographers; one of only 75 people in the world to receive this honor. Born in Brooklyn, NY on January 1, 1929, she moved to Atlanta with her husband Bob in 1978 to help establish a successful wedding and potrait studio in Sandy Springs. Ruth's love of beauty and nature is reflected in the many images captured through her lens.
She inspired her 3 sons who are also in photography. A recognized teacher and lecturer, she had one woman exhibit at the Atlanta Botanical Gardens and the Dunwoody Branch of the Dekaib County Library. Her work was also part of shows at Epcot in Orlando and was published yearly in photographic annuals. She is survived by her husband Robert; sons and daughters-in-law, Daniel and Geralyn of Lilburn, Eric and Wendy of Marietta, Richard and Laine of Little Rock; her grandchildren, Natalie, Jared and Andrew; sister and brother-in-law, Myrna and Arnold Goldman of Dana Point, CA; brother and sister-in-law, David and Donnelette Appel of Rock Hill, NY and nieces and nephews.
